Katy Batdorff | The Grand Rapids PressVibrational alchemist Guy Douglas of The Conduit hits a gong while Vance Anderson soaks up the vibes in the Sherwood Forest Friday afternoon at the Rothbury music festival.

There are ways to alter one's state at Rothbury without ingesting anything illicit (as I've been forced to discover). Highly recommended is one of the "sound massage" stations in -- where else? -- the Sherwood Forest.

I just walked -- "stumbled dreamily" might be a better way to put it -- away from one of these stations, which are recognizable as the chairs surrounded by gongs, often surrounded by people going, "whoooaaaaa...". You sit in one of the chairs and a worker, or "vibrational alchemist," strikes the gongs to create an enveloping aural environment that focuses the brain to the exclusion of normal sensory concerns.

I'm not sure that makes sense. If I'd ever meditated, I might be tempted to compare the two experiences, but I haven't, so I won't. Anyway, it was cool. It felt like the chair floated. The music and random chatter I'd otherwise be hearing faded into the background. When it ended, it was like waking up from a satisfying sleep. I stood up and walked in the opposite direction as I'd intended and didn't care for a good five minutes.

"Sound waves travel through the body. It puts you in a state of relaxation," said Guy Douglas, one of the vibrational alchemists with a company called the Conduit. "It creates a plane for you to relax and self-heal."

No offense to any of the bands, but the gongs are the most soothing sound at Rothbury.
